FilmWorkshops.net offers unique, enriching – and above all, fun – classes and workshops for participants aged 8 – 17.
A typical live-action filmmaking workshop begins with a small group brainstorming session. Once we’ve decided on the subject of our film, we begin outlining. Then comes the scripting phase, in which everyone is free to contribute dialogue or story tweaks. We finalize our script in proper Hollywood screenplay format, and then begin making lists. Lists of props, costume items, locations, shot ideas…

Then it’s time for a run-through. This usually involves acting out the script, refining the dialogue through rehearsal and improvisation, and looking for places where we can streamline the story.
And finally, it’s time to shoot! Most kids enjoy performing, but the opportunity is always there for those who would rather work behind the camera. We keep our groups small so we have the flexibility to accomodate all interests.

Kids come out of these workshops learning the value of nimble thinking and cooperation. Many learn to embrace logistical and budgetary constraints for the unique creative challenges they offer.
Of course, most don’t realize they’re learning anything at all. All they know is they’re having a blast!
Our animation workshops tend to be a bit more freeform, accommodating small workgroups, pairs, or individuals. We usually focus on stop-motion animation using digital cameras. This allows kids freedom of movement, so they’re not just sitting in front of a computer screen for hours at a time.
In our animation workshops, kids are limited only by their imaginations. Clay, Legos, shoes, yesterday’s uneaten lunch… if they can photograph it, they can animate it! Participants don’t have to be able to draw or sculpt, but of course it doesn’t hurt if they can.

One of the great things about working in animation is that you can get results almost instantly. No wading through outtakes or waiting for a watchable edit. Here, you just take your pictures, load ‘em up and watch ‘em move.
Animation is an activity your kids can take home with them. All they need is a digital camera, a computer, and something to animate. We’ve seen many kids who never get excited about anything come to life in our animation workshops, even continuing their projects at home.
And, hey – it’s educational! You can’t animate without touching on math, science, and art. And there are few more enjoyable ways to sharpen your problem-solving skills.
But your kids don’t have to know that.
